Silhouette Studio Designer Edition is a one-time paid upgrade (about $39.99, October 2026) that adds SVG import, custom fill patterns, lasso selection and warp templates to the free Basic Edition. If you buy SVG files from other sites, you need Designer or higher. If you only cut Silhouette Design Store files, text and traced images, Basic may be all you need.

How we picked: compiled from manufacturer specifications, published prices and owner feedback patterns. We have not tested these machines ourselves. Our method.

The four editions at a glance

Silhouette America publishes an edition chart on its Silhouette Studio download page. The current download listed there is version 5.0.539 (Silhouette Studio 5.x). There are four editions, and each paid tier includes everything in the tiers below it.

What Basic Edition already does

Basic is free to download for Windows and Mac. Silhouette’s chart gives it these rows:

  • Create designs and send them to a Silhouette machine
  • Basic design and text tools
  • Manipulation tools: move, rotate, scale, align and replicate
  • Pop-up creator (marked “Advanced” in the chart)

Silhouette’s product page also highlights a built-in trace tool for turning an image into a cut line, and the chart does not list tracing as an upgrade feature. The CAMEO 5 user’s manual walks through tracing a PNG with the Trace panel in the standard workflow. If you want to turn a picture into a cut file, see our trace image guide.

Basic also connects to the Silhouette Design Store, which Silhouette says holds over 300,000 designs. Store files open in Basic without any upgrade. That matters, because the store is a separate purchase or subscription that has nothing to do with your Studio edition.

The big limit: SVG files

Silhouette’s own FAQ on the Studio page is direct about this: to open SVG files you need Designer Edition or above, and to save SVG files you need Business Edition. Since most third-party cut files are sold as SVGs, this one rule decides the upgrade for a lot of people. Our SVG in Basic Edition guide covers your options in more detail.

What Designer Edition adds

Designer is the first paid tier. According to Silhouette’s chart, it adds three features over Basic:

  1. Ability to import custom patterns. You can bring in your own image files as fill patterns, useful for print and cut projects.
  2. Lasso selection. Select parts of a design freehand instead of with a rectangle.
  3. Warp templates. Bend text or shapes into preset shapes.

On top of those chart rows, the FAQ confirms Designer is the minimum edition for opening SVG files. For most hobby users, that SVG line is the real reason to buy.

Who should buy Designer: anyone who downloads or buys cut files outside the Silhouette Design Store. That includes free SVGs from blogs, files from Etsy shops and bundle sites. If that is you, Designer is the cheapest edition that removes the wall.

Who can skip it: people who only cut text, basic shapes, traced images and Design Store files. Basic handles that list.

What Designer Plus adds

Designer Plus includes everything in Designer and adds five rows in Silhouette’s chart:

  • Advanced rhinestone features
  • Import embroidery files (PES, DST, EXP, JEF and XXX)
  • Flexishapes
  • Puzzle generator
  • Advanced warp (conical and perspective)

The embroidery import is the one that surprises people. It lets you bring machine embroidery files into Studio, which is handy if you also own an embroidery machine and want matching cut and stitch designs. Conical warp is aimed at shapes that taper, so it is the one to look at if you decorate cups or tumblers.

Who should buy Designer Plus: rhinestone template makers, tumbler decorators who want conical warp, and crafters who already own embroidery files. If none of those apply, Designer covers you.

What Business Edition adds

Business is the top tier. Over Designer Plus, Silhouette’s chart lists:

  • Import Ai, CDR and EPS files (Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW and EPS vector formats)
  • Weed line feature
  • Multi-cutter support

Silhouette’s FAQ adds that saving files as SVG requires Business.

Who should buy Business: people selling products who receive client artwork in Illustrator or CorelDRAW formats, anyone running more than one Silhouette at once, and designers who want to export SVG files from Studio. The weed line feature is aimed at vinyl work, where extra cut lines in the waste area make weeding large jobs easier.

For a hobby user cutting a few shirts a month, Business is usually more than needed.

Upgrade path and pricing

You do not have to jump straight to the top. Silhouette America lists these options on its Studio page (October 2026):

  • Basic to Designer: about $39.99 (regular $49.99), digital delivery
  • Basic to Designer Plus: about $59.99 (regular $74.99), digital delivery
  • Basic to Business: about $79.99 (regular $99.99), digital delivery
  • Designer to Designer Plus software card: about $20.00 (regular $25.00)
  • Business Edition software card: about $79.99 (regular $99.99)

Silhouette also sells physical software cards for people who want a card instead of an emailed code. At the listed special prices, Basic to Designer (about $39.99) plus the Designer to Designer Plus card (about $20.00) adds up to the same about $59.99 as going straight from Basic to Designer Plus. So starting at Designer and stepping up later did not cost extra at October 2026 prices, which makes Designer the lower-risk first purchase if you are unsure.

Silhouette America lists the upgrades with a regular price and a “special price.” Those numbers can change, so check the Studio page before you buy.

How to choose in three questions

  1. Do you use SVG files from anywhere other than the Silhouette Design Store? If yes, you need at least Designer.
  2. Do you make rhinestone templates, warp designs onto tapered tumblers, or own embroidery files? If yes, look at Designer Plus.
  3. Do you sell products, receive Ai/EPS/CDR files, run more than one Silhouette or need to save SVGs? If yes, Business is the edition built for that.

If you answered no to all three, stay on Basic and spend the money on materials.

Common mix-ups

  • The Design Store subscription is not an edition upgrade. It buys designs, not software features. New machines include a one-month store trial when registered, according to Silhouette’s machine pages and the CAMEO 5 manual.
  • A new machine does not include a paid edition. Silhouette’s CAMEO 5α and Portrait 4 pages list “Silhouette Studio software (download)” in the box, which is the free Basic download unless you buy a bundle that says otherwise.
  • Tracing is not the same as SVG import. Tracing creates a cut line from a picture in any edition. SVG import opens a file that already has vector cut lines.

If you have not set up your machine yet, our CAMEO 5 setup guide walks through installing Studio and making the first cut.

FAQ

Is Silhouette Studio Basic Edition really free? Yes. Silhouette America lists Basic as free on its Studio download page, for Windows and Mac.

Can Basic Edition open SVG files? No. Silhouette’s own FAQ says opening SVG files requires Designer Edition or above.

Is Designer Edition a subscription? No. Silhouette describes its paid editions as one-time upgrade options with no subscription required.

Which edition do I need to save a design as an SVG? Business Edition, according to Silhouette’s FAQ.

Can I upgrade from Designer later instead of buying Business now? Yes. Silhouette sells a Designer to Designer Plus card (about $20.00, October 2026), and the paid tiers stack, so you can step up as your needs grow.
