Silhouette Cameo 5 setup takes about ten steps: remove the blue shipping tape and cushions, create a Silhouette account, register the machine, install Silhouette Studio, connect by USB or Bluetooth, then load material and the AutoBlade and run a test cut. The steps below follow Silhouette’s CAMEO5 User’s Manual (CAMEO5-UM-151) and Silhouette Studio 5.x, the version Silhouette America currently offers for download (5.0.539 in October 2026).

A note on models: Silhouette America’s store now sells the machine as the CAMEO 5α (about $279.99, October 2026) and the CAMEO 5α Plus (about $399.99). The manual covers the CAMEO 5 and CAMEO 5 PLUS. The setup flow is the same, but the box contents differ slightly, so check the list in Step 1.

Before you start

You need:

  • A sturdy table. The manual says the CAMEO 5 weighs about 5 kg (about 5.5 kg for the PLUS).
  • A Windows or Mac computer. The manual lists Windows 10 or later and macOS 10.14 (64-bit) or later. Check Silhouette’s current system requirements page if your computer is older.
  • Administrator rights on that computer for the install.
  • A USB cable if you do not want to use Bluetooth. The manual says to purchase the USB cable separately.
  • Something to cut. Adhesive vinyl on its backing is the easiest first material.

Step 1: Unpack and check the box

Silhouette America’s CAMEO 5α product page lists the box as: the machine, AC adapter, a 12-inch cutting mat (standard tack), AutoBlade Type B, a sketch pen adapter and a safety sheet. The roll feeder is listed as sold separately for the 5α. The original CAMEO 5 manual also lists a roll feeder and a hand-held blade adjuster, so older boxes may include more.

If anything is missing, the manual says to contact the seller or the Silhouette America customer center.

Step 2: Remove the packaging materials

The machine ships with blue tape and foam cushions holding moving parts in place. The manual lists:

  1. Two cushions on the outside, pulled out from the top.
  2. Inside the cover: blue tape, two protective sheets and five cushions, pulled out from the front and back.
  3. Two cushions holding the Tool Carriage. Remove the first, slide the carriage slightly left, then remove the second.

When you move the Tool Carriage by hand, turn the power off, hold the carriage body (not the Tool Holder) and move it slowly. The manual warns that moving it too fast may cause a malfunction.

Step 3: Create your Silhouette account

  1. Go to silhouetteamerica.com and click Machine Setup at the bottom of the page.
  2. Choose your language and click CREATE ACCOUNT.
  3. Fill in your name, email, password, language, currency and timezone. The manual says the password must be at least 10 characters and include at least one number.
  4. Tick the privacy policy, terms and age boxes, then click CREATE ACCOUNT.
  5. Open the confirmation email and click the link. The manual is clear that an unverified account cannot register a machine or use the Design Store.

Step 4: Register the machine

  1. Return to Machine Setup and sign in.
  2. Enter your country and address, then click CONTINUE.
  3. Enter the serial number. It is on a sticker on the back of the machine, an 11-digit code that starts with a letter.
  4. Confirm the model and click REGISTER MY MACHINE.

Registration unlocks the free designs (100 for the CAMEO 5) and a one-month Silhouette Design Store trial. The manual adds a warning worth reading: if you start the trial with a credit card on file, a paid subscription starts automatically when the trial ends. To use it as a trial only, choose I don’t have a credit card on the trial screen.

The manual also says not to click CONTINUE TO NEXT STEP after registering. Install the software first instead.

Step 5: Install Silhouette Studio

Do not plug the machine into your computer yet. The manual says to finish the software install first.

  1. Go to silhouetteamerica.com/setup and pick your language.
  2. On the Silhouette Machine Setup screen, select your model.
  3. Choose the Windows or Mac installer.
  4. Windows: run the downloaded .exe and follow the setup wizard. Mac: open the .dmg and drag Silhouette Studio into Applications.

The free download is the Basic Edition. You only need a paid edition for extras like opening SVG files. See Designer Edition vs Basic before you buy anything.

Step 6: Connect by Bluetooth or USB

Bluetooth:

  1. Plug in the power cables, then press and hold the Power Button for at least two seconds.
  2. Press the Bluetooth Button on the machine. The manual describes the lamp as flashing blue when available and solid dark blue when connected.
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on your computer.
  4. In Silhouette Studio, open the SEND tab and click the Silhouette Devices icon.
  5. Select CAMEO5 (or CAMEO5 PLUS) from the list.

Setup is done when the SEND panel shows the machine status as “Ready” or “Load Media.”

USB:

  1. Connect the power cable first. The manual says not to connect the USB cable before the power cable.
  2. Connect the USB cable to your computer.
  3. Press the Power Button.
  4. In the SEND tab, click Silhouette Devices and select your machine.

Step 7: Update the firmware if asked

If the SEND panel shows a firmware update message, click Update Now. The manual says the update can take 5 to 10 minutes and that you must not turn the machine off during it.

Step 8: Load your material (mat vs matless)

The CAMEO 5 can cut some materials without a mat. The manual’s rule:

  • Matless: standard-width media that has a release paper (backing), such as adhesive vinyl or heat transfer vinyl on its carrier, can be loaded directly. Supported widths on the CAMEO 5 are 5.5 in., A4, Letter, 9 in., A3 and 12 in.
  • Use the mat: non-standard sizes, anything without a release paper, and any die cut where you cut all the way through. The manual warns that skipping the mat in these cases may damage the machine and blade. Cardstock and paper go on the mat.

To load:

  1. Raise the Pinch Roller Unit lever, slide the right unit to the symbol on the front panel that matches your media width or mat size, then lower the lever.
  2. Slide the Auxiliary Rollers to where the material might lift or warp.
  3. Press the Media Load Button once. It flashes and the machine waits for media.
  4. Line up the left edge of the material or mat with the Guiding Line on the front panel.
  5. Push the leading edge straight against the Pinch Rollers, holding it taut with both hands.
  6. After about three seconds, the rollers start and feed the material in.

The manual calls this method Load Media-1. In Load Media-2, you line up the material first and then press the Media Load Button. If the material goes in crooked with Load Media-2, the manual suggests switching to Load Media-1.

Step 9: Install the AutoBlade

The CAMEO 5 has two tool holders. The manual says the AutoBlade goes in Tool Holder 1 and specialty tools go in Tool Holder 2.

  1. Pull the Tool Holder lock lever slowly toward you to unlock it.
  2. Line up the rib on the AutoBlade with the notch in the holder.
  3. Support the lock lever from below and push the blade all the way down, with no gap.
  4. Lock the lever.

The machine detects the tool and shows it in the SEND tab.

Step 10: Make a test cut, then your first cut

The manual’s first rule of cutting: make a test cut every time you change material. Wrong blade depth, force or speed can break the blade tip or waste material.

  1. On the DESIGN tab, use the Drawing Tool to draw a small box and the Text Tool to add a word.
  2. Open the SEND tab. Choose your material from the cutting conditions list, set Action to Cut, and confirm the tool.
  3. If your material is not on the list, click Add New Material Type and set it manually. The manual says to start with slow speed and low force and raise them gradually.
  4. Run the test cut and check it. For vinyl, the blade should cut the vinyl but not the backing.
  5. Adjust if needed, then press SEND for the real cut.

To pause, press the Pause Button. For an emergency stop, press the Power Button once, then the flashing Media Removal Button to return the carriage home.

Blade depth starting points

The manual gives this AutoBlade guideline. Treat each row as a starting point and always test cut.

Blade depthMaterial type (from the manual)
1Thin paper and films, smooth iron-on (HTV)
2 to 3Medium paper, thick film, flock iron-on
4 to 6Thick paper such as scrapbooking stock
7 to 10Very thick paper such as cardboard

For more material settings, see the cut settings reference. If cuts come out incomplete, our Cameo not cutting through guide covers the fixes.
